Fontainebleau, located 50km south of Paris, offers the most extensive range of bouldering in the world. ‘Font’ for the English or ‘Bleau’ for the French, has been used since the 1870s with a huge variety of routes spread across the forest floor. Having your own vehicle is widely recommended as bouldering areas are far apart. Rangers occasionally roam the car parks so be careful if camping out!
Fontainebleau also hosts a UNESCO listed Park and Palace, used by the kings of France from the 12th century. In the 16th century this was transformed and enlarged with the aim of making a ‘New Rome’.
