Hi! I’m Kathmandu, an adventure cat, and this is my story.
Like all good stories, this one starts at the pub. At just three days old, me (Kathmandu) and my two sisters (Moo and Fluffy) along with our mother were rescued from under a pub in the seaside city of Swansea. We were taken in and cared for, and spent much of our time running riots around the house together. When we weren’t causing chaos, we were probably sleeping in our favourite spots – backs of humans’ legs, on humans’ shoulders or in cardboard boxes. Moo loved sleeping squashed behind the washing machine but we preferred the more conventional spots. With every passing day, we all grew up pretty quickly. Though looking back we were still tiny compared to now.
At 3 months, mum moved out and I got a new home with these humans. Most cats don’t get to explore the countryside. They just spend their days patrolling the neighbourhood and sleeping. But not me. No. My humans have taken taken me all over the UK on adventures in their van, from Land’s End to John O’Groats. From coastlines to meowtain summits, come rain or shine (or snow in some cases). I love travelling in the van and exploring new places, making new friends and being outside. I also love my bed and usually require a few days rest after coming back from days on the road.
We’re always going on adventures together so why not check out what I get up to on Instagram (@travels_of_kat) and below.
When were you born? 8 April 2018
Why “Kathmandu”? Being the stepping stone in the Himalayas, the city of Kathmandu is all about adventure. So am I.
First adventure? Carsington Water
Longest adventure? North Coast 500 route in the van (10 days)
Best moment? Summiting Mam Tor at 10:30pm and chasing rolling stones on the way back down.
Scariest moment? Being caught by a car and having my tail run over. Then having it amputated a week later.
Next adventure? No idea – ask the humans!

Kathmandu summits in the Peak District

Last weekend we headed up to the Peak District. During the days, my humans attended an Outdoor First Aid course (for humans) and I slept in the van but in the morning and evenings we went for walks.
Kathmandu at Kendal Mountain Festival
November 15, 2018
Check out my adventures around Kendal. Kendal Mountain Festival is the UK’s main social event for outdoor enthusiasts. I’m definitely an outdoorsy type so I thought I’d make an appearance. I’d never been up to the Lake District either, so it was a good opportunity to explore some of national park.
Kathmandu explores the Black Mountains, Wales

Adventure! Malverns AONB
October 5, 2018
Long weekend down in the Malverns. Late night walks in the woods, early morning walks on the Malverns. Went to Redpoint Worcester Climbing center where some people recongised me from instagram! Can’t go anywhere. Went for an early morning walk, a dog scared me, I bit dads finger.

While mum went off with AdventureQueens, I did my own adventuring with dad. We went for a walk down some muddy tracks, where I met a few people but didn’t hang around to chat. We turned around to start making our way back to van, through all the mud again, when I bumped into a horse (and rider). I was really scared, I had no idea what it was, it was just huge.

Quick walk along the canal. Got a bit scared so walked in the field behind instead. Met a few people, had a chat but couldn’t stick around, had to go and explore.

At just 3 days old, Kat, her mum and two sisters got rescued from underneath a Swansea pub and taken back to our friends house who cared for them on behalf of Cats Protection. We were in the middle of Portugal on our 2018 road trip, when they got in touch with us asking whether we’d be interested in adopting one of the kittens.
